Petroleum Engineering Wiki

Most of the research and project work at the university is placed on files and stored as hardcopies. Very often, the know-how gets lost once the corresponding authors leave university.

This PEPE-projeckt has the following objectives:

1.       Build a knowledge management system for petroleum engineering in Leoben

2.       Keep acquired knowledge at the university up-to-date and maintainable

3.       Use the framework for educational purposes (Phase 1) and provide extendable design for general purpose use (“PE Wiki”)

This project is designed to capture knowledge and make it easily available. The primary objective is to create a framework similar to Wikipedia for petroleum engineering. After a short review of available engines, the software "MediaWiki " was selected and has been customized to set-up an initial implementation accessible from the www.petroleumengineer.at website.

The first phase:

  • a reservoir engineering tool box should accompany the implementation with useful tools for simple, analytical reservoir engineering calculations and graphs (project in progress)
  • MSc thesis will create a model for a Virtual PVT cell to run PVT experiments in a virtual lab. The PVT cell should be operated from the website as well. (project finished)
  • The final component of the first phase in this project is the content management, which should be done by one teaching assistant (half-time position) who will enter project work, theses contents, petroleum glossary and other relevant information to the framework. (project in progress)

This framework should be extended after the first phase to the other PE disciplines.
